Best Breeds for Apartment Living

Apartment living can sometimes be inconvenient if you are a dog lover - you have to be worried about noise, exercise needs, space/size, etc. Luckily, if your apartment allows dogs, there are some breeds that are easier to manage with apartment living!

  • Pugs - Even tempered, loyal companions, small. They are curious by nature so may require longer walks to explore, but pugs can easily relax and unwind once they are home.
  • Yorkshire Terrier - Sprightly and affectionate. Small in size, but have big personalities. Their energy can be quelled with daily walks and are relatively low maintenance (does require grooming)
  • English Bulldogs - Calm, courageous, and protective. They don't require much exercise outside of regular walks and occasional play date.
  • Shih Tzu - Mild temperament and affectionate; requires frequent grooming
  • Chihuahua - Small, sweet, and sassy. They also don't require much exercise
  • Greyhounds - Despite their tall stature, they are considered "mellow house dogs" but will need the occasional sprint in the dog park to expend their energy. Smart and easy to train.
  • French Bulldog - Cute, friendly, jolly. They don't bark much and require less exercise
  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - Sensitive breed and known for good behavior. Mild mannered and affectionate, but does require daily exercise
  • Dachshund - Short, energetic breed - they do get bored easily so they require lots of enertainment
  • Miniature Pinscher - Great watchdogs, exceptional intelligence and energy
  • Basenji - "Cat-like" dog, loyal and protective, prone to escape, and yodel rather than bark
  • Boston Terrier - Calm, lovable dogs who don't require much space, tend not to bark
  • Bishon Frise - Energetic, needs daily exercise, frequent grooming required
  • Havanese - Clingy personality that love to play and have lots of energy

These are just a few of the breeds that are better than others for apartment living. Please remember to do extensive research before adopting a dog to ensure that they will be a good fit for you, for not just now, but forever. Keep in mind that not all apartments will allow dogs - so if your current living situation allows them, please make sure any future apartment you may move to will as well. Also keep in mind that although some breeds don't require as much exercise as others, all dogs DO need some sort of daily exercise.

What To Consider Before Gifting A Dog For The Holidays

With Christmas being right around the corner, it's not uncommon for families to get puppies as a gift for their family member or themselves over the holidays. As wonderful as a gift dogs and puppies are, unfortunately, often times they are soon surrendered for adoption because not enough research was done to ensure the dog you are getting is a good fit for you and your family. Often times, important things to consider prior such as dog's breed, dog's energy levels, dog's temperament, dog's grooming and health needs, the time, attention, and training required, etc. are overlooked before bringing a dog home. For example, if you are interested in a low maintenance dog, a golden doodle, though adorable, may not be the best choice because they require daily brushing and regular grooming every 6-8 weeks to avoid matted hair (see blog post on matting ). Dogs are not objects, dogs are living, breathing creatures and most importantly, they are family. We encourage everyone
